On the occasion of the VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2019, the MAK DESIGN LAB will be repositioned. Objects of the collection will be placed in the context of new, multi-layered heterogeneous perspectives in order to increasingly position design as engine of sustainable change. For the first time, the linking of the themes of a BIENNALE will become visible in conception of a permanent collection of a museum.
The skills and tools of the 21st century – human abilities, different forms of action and tools, digital and analogue – are becoming increasingly important in context of (against the backdrop of) the challenges and opportunities of digitalisation and have noticeable impact on how we produce, consume, work, live, dress, stage and protect ourselves and on how we learn, communicate and eat now and in the future.
The many opportunities available to us in the digital age are changing our way of relating to the world in different ways:
How do habits and consumption patterns have to be changed in order to positively influence the health and development of nature and civilisation? What material is the fabric of the future made of? Which production methods will still make sense tomorrow? And what kind of dilemma is the design of the future facing? How and what should be produced in a post-growth society and how can we succeed in consuming in a fair, sustainable and meaningful way? What does the logic of the common good (public welfare economy) mean to the logic of the market and new education for the future of work (work of the future)?
Central focus of the repositioning of the MAK DESIGN LAB is the visualisation of contexts and the mediation of mechanisms of action and dynamics in order to create sensitivity for individual forms of working and alternative social roles of the future and to strengthen the function of design within processes of change. At the same time, an understanding of the far-reaching role of design in the digital modernity is to be generated. The focus of the repositioning of the MAK DESIGN LAB is ultimately the development of a resonant world relationship.
